from Plato Logic Limited, 13th October 2009 Global beer consumption grew by 1.8% in 2008, but a sharp slowdown to less than 1% growth is currently forecast for 2009, according to Plato Logic’s latest annual “World Beer Report”. China further strengthened its position as the world’s biggest beer market in 2008, achieving record sales of 407mhl. China’s margin over the USA stretched to over 150 million hectolitres, with Russia in third place just ahead of Brazil. Chart – Top 5 Global Beer Markets, 2008

2009 projections in more detail,
Plato Logic forecast the sharpest decline in beer consumption to be in
Europe (-3.9%), where the East European markets have been among those worst
affected by the downturn. In contrast, volumes for the total Americas region are
projected to be flat. Driven by China,
Plato Logic are forecasting more than 4% growth in 2009 for the Asia/Pacific
region and Africa/M.East is also projected to grow.
